Advocate

Why advocacy matters

A global pandemic, a record-breaking hurricane season, historic wildfires, crippling droughts, declining fisheries— the past few years established disruption as the new normal for America’s coasts. National Estuarine Research Reserve System (NERRS) sites are on the front lines of these disasters, experiencing them alongside the people they serve.

Communities look to Reserves as partners in addressing the challenges of a changing coast and as places for safe outdoor experiences that are essential to public health. As coastal challenges intensify, it is critical that Reserves continue to be more resilient and ready to support the communities that have relied on them for almost 50 years.

How you can get involved

Join the letter writing campaign.

Writing letters to legislative representatives is a great way to reach out and make sure they know how much you value the Reserve. You are welcome to write your own letter or adapt the template below. If you write your own letter, please express appreciation for the Lake Superior Reserve and the benefits it provides for your community and/or your organization, particularly with regard to preparing for, and recovering from, environmental disruptions like rising water levels and climate change.

Post on social media.

Sharing images, stories, and what you appreciate about the Estuary and Lake Superior Reserve helps others understand your connection with the Reserve. If you’re going to post, consider tagging Wisconsin and Minnesota representatives so they can see they ways you connect with the natural spaces in and around the Reserve.

Be on the lookout for more information about upcoming social media campaigns- the more we post, the more we can show our representatives how much we love the Reserve!
