What is the Christmas Bird Count?
The Christmas Bird Count is an annual community science event hosted all over the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Each circle that participates counts birds within their given area, and that data is collected by the National Audubon Society to track changes in bird populations. The Christmas Bird Count has been happening for 126 years!
How does the Christmas Bird Count work?
Each participant (or group if desired) will be assigned a location in Superior to count birds. This information will be distributed once registration closes prior to the Christmas Bird Count. Bird counters will have all day (sunrise-sunset) to count birds in their given area on December 27. The entire area does not have to be covered, but rather participants will track their distance and duration within their given area. Resources will also be distributed to registered participants who wish to participate in the bird count. All bird data can be sent to the compiler once bird counting is complete.
Who can participate in the Christmas Bird Count?
Anyone can participate regardless of skill level. We will pair beginners with knowledgeable birders who have experience with bird counting and identification. We appreciate any enthusiastic participants willing to learn, as well as experienced birders who can contribute their time and knowledge to the count!
Any questions can be directed to Friends of the Lake Superior Reserve Community Outreach Coordinator, Callie Grones, who is the compiler for the Superior Circle of the Christmas Bird Count (email: outreach@folsr.org).
