Where the River Meets the Lake Summer 2019

Greetings!

It has been a busy first half of 2019 for the Friends of Lake Superior Reserve. Being a Friend of Lake Superior Reserve means that you are supporting the mission and operation of the Reserve through raising funds, contributing volunteer efforts, and building membership in support Reserve programs, facilities, and operations. Thanks to you, we can celebrate these highlights: We held our first annual member meeting and celebration in February.

◼The new board elected a slate of officers.

◼ In March we helped support the St. Louis River Summit.

◼ We held our first major fundraising event: a tree seedling sale.

◼ We helped the University of Wisconsin Foundation create the Lake Superior Reserve fund.

◼ We conducted our first annual planning retreat, setting priorities for 2019.

◼ We are implementing a “customer relationship management system” to provide better support and services to members, donors and volunteers

◼ We’re developing our first communications strategy.

◼ We are preparing for our participation in Lake Superior Day at the Estuarium. The remainder of this newsletter provides a very brief article on each highlight. But I especially want to encourage you to attend—and volunteer for if you can— the Lake Superior Day event at the Reserve’s Estuarium on July 21. See the article for information on this fun FREE event and how you can help make it successful.

Lastly, please reach out to me with any questions, comments or suggestions you have at m.koutnik@comcast.net.

Sincerely,

Mike Koutnik, Chair
