Where the River Meets the Lake - Winter 2026 Newsletter
It was wonderful to see many of you at the Friends of the Lake Superior Reserve's annual members meeting in February. During the business portion of the meeting, we welcomed three new people to FOLSR's board of directors: Katie Williams, Meghan Klasic and Matt Starry. Their fresh ideas and energy aids our ability to achieve FOLSR's mission to support the vitality and effectiveness of the Lake Superior Reserve.
At the meeting we also honored out-going board members Mike Koutnik, Jim Anklam, Rita Farchmin, and Jim Haasis. Their leadership and wise council will be sorely missed. For those of you who don't know, Mike was one of FOLSR's founding board members and served as board chair. Jim Anklam also did a stint as FOLSR's board chair while Rita served as the non-profit's secretary. Jim Haasis and his wife Cheryl helped anchor the volunteer docent program at the Lake Superior Estuarium.
Though we're not quite done with winter, it is exciting to see signs of the coming season. Maybe you've noticed the longer daylight hours and that ravens are starting to nest. Below you'll read about some of FOLSR's spring activities and how you can participate. First, however, we're looking forward to spending time with some of you at the St. Louis River Summit where FOLSR is again organizing a listening session for decision-makers. This session will highlight the importance of the Lake Superior Reserve and the St. Louis River Estuary to an audience of state elected officials and their staffers.
I'll end with a heartfelt thank you to all who started or renewed FOLSR memberships since November and to those of you who donated funds to support our AmeriCorps position and the St. Louis River Summit. We couldn't do what we do without you!
With gratitude,
Sharon Moen, FOLSR Board Chair
