2021 List of Deeds Done

What does FOLSR do? Let us count the ways! Here’s a list of our activities in 2021.

  1. Raised over $10,000 in sponsorships in support of the St. Louis River Summit

  2. Conducted two beach cleanups at Wisconsin Point, collecting over 950 lbs of garbage

  3. Held 4 birding events at Wisconsin Point, including a St. Louis River Summit field trip, an Accessible Walk and a Jaegerfest moment with the WI Soc. for Ornithology

  4. Awarded a $3,000 City of Superior grant: purchased binoculars and spotting scopes to support future birding events

  5. Congressional outreach through in-person meetings and letter writing requested continuing support for:

    • Great Lakes Restoration Initiative

    • NOAA Coastal Management

    • National Estuarine Research Reserve Program

    • Land and Water Conservation Fund

  6. Participated in NERRA’s “I Heart Estuaries” social media campaign

  7. Participated in City of Superior Ice Festival

  8. Participated in City of SuperiorLake Superior Day

  9. Participated in grand opening events for City of Superior recreation projects

    • Bear Creek Trail

    • Pokegama Bay Launch

  10. Grew membership: 50 new members

  11. Provided volunteers to staff Lake Superior Estuarium

  12. Certified an additional volunteer operator for Lake Superior Reserve research boat

  13. Completed web site redesign

  14. Added new board members:

    • Rita Farchmin

    • Will Mowchan

    • Tom Hollenhorst

  15. Completed grant-funded project to improve FOLSR communications

  16. New mission and vision; create elevator pitch

  17. Enhanced newsletter

  18. Providing items for sale at events and in the Estuarium

  19. Organized the 2021 FOLSR annual member meeting
